Particularly agile handling and high levels of active safety were the development objectives for the new Astra’s IDS chassis. The suspension features McPherson struts and a subframe at the front, and a torsion beam with double-walled, U-shaped profile at the rear. The state-of-the-art design used in the new Astra not only retains all the advantages of a conventional torsion beam axle – such as minimal space requirements, low weight and high camber control – it can also be precisely tuned to the specific requirements of different variants within a model range. |

The Astra GTC features the same elaborate SAFETEC safety concept as the five-door model. The independent consumer protection organization Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) tested the safety of the Astra sedan, and many of its competitors, in a series of standardized crash tests. The result: the Astra was awarded the highest rating of five stars for passenger safety. With a total of 34 points, Euro NCAP classified it as one of the safest sedans in the compact class (small family cars). The five-door Astra was also awarded four stars and 39 points for excellent child protection. |
