Brilliantly
versatile, with generous interior space and modern design
within its compact overall dimensions: these were the
criteria applied by Opel when developing the new Meriva. This five-seat
minivan is in a smaller model category than the Zafira,
but should have no difficulty in equaling its success.
FlexSpace®
The secret of the Meriva’s unusual adaptability is the brilliant
FlexSpace interior packaging concept. Opel’s
engineers have divided the rear seat system into three entirely
independent units: two wide individual seats and a narrower center
seat. In the basic configuration, three people have ample space.
One of the key innovations found in the FlexSpace
system is its ingenious center seat design, which consists of a
lap-and-shoulder automatic-reel seat belt and a fully-retracting
head restraint.
But that’s not all: the new Meriva’s seat system is
even more versatile. To increase the load area when four seats are
in use, the outer rear seats can be pushed forward individually.
If the seat backs are also raised to a 17-degree angle (six degrees
steeper than normal), a load space of more than 530 liters
is obtained. If all three seats are folded forward and locked in
the lowest position, a flat load-area floor almost 1.70
meters long is available. Finally, if the front passenger’s
seat back is also folded, even an item as long as a surfboard can
be carried.
